Homekey Program

Sep 03 2020

Adoption of the City’s 2014-2021 Housing Element has guided our efforts to determine the number of families using hotels/motels as temporary residences and to coordinate with regional partners experienced in conversion of motel units to permanent housing.

As part of the State’s response to COVID-19, the Homekey Program seeks to quickly fund the conversion of motel units into housing. In partnership with the City of Stanton under the State Homekey Program, the County of Orange and Jamboree Housing Corporation submitted three applications as co-applicants, all located in the City of Stanton, for a total request of $28.1 million in funding. The County recently received word that the State reserved funding for both The Tahiti Motel and Stanton Inn and Suites applications. Although this does not yet represent an award from the State, it is one step closer to securing funding.

If funded, the two projects will create a total of 132 new affordable homes for people experiencing homelessness who have been impacted by COVID-19 in Orange County — a huge win for both public health and addressing the homelessness crisis long-term.
